Local SEO Tips for Law Firms

Written by:JaMichael MitchellJuly 24, 2026

Legal is consistently among the most expensive local search categories in Google Ads — "personal injury lawyer" clicks can run $50 to $100 or more in competitive markets. That cost pressure makes organic local SEO more valuable for law firms than almost any other professional category. A firm that ranks organically in the map pack captures traffic that its competitors are paying significant sums to reach.

The local SEO fundamentals for law firms are the same as any local business, but the specific application — and the stakes — differ.

Google Business Profile for Law Firms

The GBP is where local search starts for most prospective legal clients. The basics apply: accurate address, current phone number, correct hours, professional photos. But law firms have some category-specific considerations.

Practice area categories: Google offers attorney-specific categories — "Personal Injury Attorney," "Family Law Attorney," "Criminal Justice Attorney," "Estate Planning Attorney" — and selecting accurate secondary categories helps a firm rank for specific practice area searches. A firm that handles both family law and estate planning should select both, not just the primary category.

The attorney consultation offer: Firms that list "Free Consultation" in their GBP offering attract more initial clicks from high-intent searchers. If your firm offers free initial consultations, this should be explicitly visible in your profile — not buried in the website.

Office photos and team photos: Legal clients want to see the space where they might be meeting. A photo of the conference room, the reception area, and the attorneys creates familiarity before the first visit. Firms with genuine, current photos consistently outperform firms relying on exterior shots or stock imagery.

Reviews in Legal: What to Ask Clients to Mention

The volume and content of reviews both matter for law firm local SEO. Specifically for legal services, the most useful reviews — both for ranking and for persuading prospective clients — are those that describe the communication experience.

When asking satisfied clients to share a review, it helps to prompt them gently: "If you're comfortable, it would mean a lot if you could mention what the process was like and how we kept you informed." Reviews that describe a transparent, communicative experience address the #1 anxiety of prospective legal clients: not knowing what's happening with their case.

Responding to every review — including any negative ones — is especially important for law firms. A measured, professional response to a critical review demonstrates exactly the composure and communication that prospective clients want to see in an attorney.

Practice Area Pages That Actually Rank

Each major practice area a firm handles should have its own dedicated page, written to answer the questions real clients ask. "How long does a divorce take in [state]?" "What happens after a DUI arrest in [city]?" "Do I need a will or a trust?"

These questions are what prospective clients type into Google. A practice area page that directly answers them — in plain English, without excessive legal jargon — will rank for those searches and will convert the traffic they generate, because the visitor immediately finds what they were looking for.

Generic practice area pages that describe the law without helping the prospective client understand their situation are the most common missed opportunity in law firm websites.

Citations and Directory Presence for Attorneys

Law firms should be listed accurately on:

  • Google Business Profile
  • Avvo
  • FindLaw
  • Martindale-Hubbell
  • Justia
  • Super Lawyers (where applicable)
  • State bar directory
  • Local legal aid or bar association directories

Every listing needs to show the exact same firm name, address, and phone number as the GBP. The state bar directory listing is particularly important for establishing legal legitimacy in Google's local search evaluation.

The Content That Builds Long-Term Local Authority

Law firms that publish consistent, useful content — not keyword-stuffed articles, but genuine answers to the questions their clients ask most — build local search authority over time. A firm that has 40 well-written articles answering common questions in its practice areas is significantly more visible than a firm with a 5-page website, regardless of how good those 5 pages are.

This doesn't require daily publishing. Two substantive articles per month, consistently over 18 months, builds a content foundation that competitors who only advertise cannot easily replicate.
